Risperdal Class Action LawyerRisperdal (risperidone) is a powerful anti-psychotic drug that has been linked to severe side effects, especially in children. J&J has paid billions to settle lawsuits alleging that they illegally marketed Risperdal to children between 1999-2005. Many of these children developed severe gynecomastia (male breast growth), weight gain, type-2 diabetes, and other side effects.

Johnson & Johnson Settles Risperdal Class Action Lawsuits

In April 2012, Johnson & Johnson (J&J) lost four consecutive Risperdal class action lawsuits from the following states: Texas ($158 million), South Carolina ($327 million), Arkansas ($1.2 billion), and Louisiana ($257.7 million).

These lawsuits were brought by each state’s Attorney General after whistle-blower lawsuits uncovered evidence that J&J was defrauding the taxpayer-funded healthcare systems. Prosecutors allege that J&J made suspicious payments to pharmacists in state government offices, presented questionable safety studies, and incentivized doctors to prescribe Risperdal instead of cheaper, equally-effective alternatives.

$2.2 Billion Risperdal Class Action Lawsuit Settlement

In November 2013, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced a $2.2 billion settlement with Johnson & Johnson. Criminal and civil lawsuits accused J&J of illegally marketing Risperdal to children, despite warnings from the FDA and studies linking Risperdal to gynecomastia (male breast growth) and childhood diabetes. About Class Action Lawsuits

Class action lawsuits are a special litigation involving many plaintiffs who have similar injuries from the same defendant. Instead of filing individual lawsuits, all of the plaintiffs join together to file one lawsuit. Members of the class action are represented by one person (the “class representative”), and only that person’s case goes to trial. If lawyers negotiate a settlement or the class is awarded compensation from a jury, all of the plaintiffs share it equally.

Risperdal Lawsuit Settlements

Johnson & Johnson is facing about 500 lawsuits involving Risperdal side effects. Of these cases, about 130 involve gynecomastia. The first lawsuit involving gynecomastia went to trial in September 2012. Just before opening statements were scheduled to begin, J&J agreed to an undisclosed settlement with the 21 year-old plaintiff, Aaron Banks. The next month, J&J settled four more lawsuits involving gynecomastia.

Your Risperdal lawsuit could be compensated for:

  • Pain and suffering (emotional and physical)
  • Medical care
  • Therapy for psychological trauma
  • Lost employment, wages, or out-of-pocket expenses
  • Permanent disfigurement
  • Disability
  • Punitive damages
