Riomet Recalled for High Levels of Toxic Chemical
On September 23, 2020, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Inc. (also called “Sun Pharma”) issued a recall for certain bottles of Riomet ER® that may contain high levels of a toxic carcinogen called NDMA.
Was My Diabetes Medication Recalled?
Sun Pharma recalled one lot of Riomet ER™ (metformin hydrochloride for extended-release oral suspension), 500-mg per 5-mL, with Lot #AB06381 and Expiration Date 10/2021. After it is combined with a liquid, it is packaged in a 16 oz. (473 mL) round bottle.
What is the Problem?
Sun Pharma issued the recall because Riomet ER tested positive for a higher amount of NDMA that the daily acceptable limit set by the FDA. No illnesses or injuries were reported as of September 2020.
What is NDMA?
N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a toxic chemical that probably causes cancer in people. In recent years, NDMA has been found in medications for diabetes, heartburn, and high blood pressure. Dozens of drug recalls have been issued in response to high levels of NDMA.
