Polaris recalled nearly 20,000 Sportsman 850 and 1000 all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) after people were seriously burned when the heat shields melted or they caught on fire.

Polaris Sportsman ATV Recall
March 21, 2017 — Polaris recalled approximately 19,200 of the model-year 2015 and 2016 Sportsman 850 and Sportsman 1000 ATVs due to a fire and burn injury hazard.
What is the problem?
The right side panel heat shield can melt on both the Sportsman 850 and 1000, posing burn and fire hazards to riders. Furthermore, on the 2015 Sportsman 1000 ATV, the exhaust springs can stretch and damage the exhaust heat seal. This can result in exhaust leaks, which poses burn and fire hazards to riders.
How Many People Were Injured?
Four people suffered minor burn injuries. Polaris has received 47 reports of fires on the recalled ATVs. At least 793 incidents have been reported to Polaris, including side panels warped, melted or burned.
What Should Consumers Do?
Consumers who own the recalled Sportsman ATVs should immediately stop using them and contact Polaris to schedule a free repair. Polaris is directly contacting all known consumers.

What Polaris ATVs Were Recalled?
The recall involves all model-year 2015 and 2016 Polaris Sportsman 850 and 1000 ATVs. The word “Polaris” is printed on the front grill and “Sportsman 850” or “Sportsman 1000” is printed on the side of the steering column. They were sold in many colors and printed patterns. The model number is on the fuel tank.
They were sold at Polaris dealerships nationwide from May 2014 through March 2017 for between $8,500 and $15,000.
