The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning patients with diabetes about a recall of 62 million Nova Max Blood Glucose Test Strips. The blood sugar test strips can show incorrect, abnormally high blood-sugar levels. An incorrect reading can lead to potentially dangerous medication errors for patients.

UPDATE: Nova Max Blood Glucose Test Strips Recalled
Nova Diabetes and the FDA have announced a global Class 1 recall of 21 lots of the following blood-sugar test strips:
- Nova Max Blood Glucose Test Strips
- Max Plus Glucose Meter Kits
The test strips were manufactured from December 2011 until April 2013. They were sold in retail stores, online, and in hospitals. The FDA believes the strips were contaminated with a chemical used in the manufacturing process, which could interfere with readings.
FDA Safety Warning for Defective Blood Sugar Test Strips
The FDA is warning about the following problem with Nova Max test strips:
“The test strips under recall may report a false, abnormally high blood glucose result. Under certain conditions, a false, abnormally high blood glucose level could result in an insulin dosing error, requiring the user to seek immediate medical attention.”
What Should I Do?
Nova Diabetes Care issued a Nova Max Recall because the test strips may report false results. The company recommends that customers should stop using the test strips. For customers who must use the test strips, Nova Care recommends performing a quality control solution test to confirm that the strips are working correctly. If the results are inconsistent, the company recommends that customers contact their health care provider.
