What is Neocate Baby Food?

Neocate® is baby food for infants with severe allergies to milk, soy, and other foods. Unlike other types of infant formula, Neocate is an amino-acid based formula that does not contain milk or soy. It is manufactured by Nutricia and sold in the U.S. and worldwide.

What is the problem?

Nutricia updated the label on Neocate formula in March 2016 to warn that babies with allergies “should be routinely monitored by clinicians” if they were being fed Neocate as a primary or sole source of nutrition. Nutricia did not warn parents about the risk of broken bones or rickets.

Neocate Linked to Low Phosphate Levels

In April 2017, a study published in Bone Journal by researchers from Yale investigated 51 children who were diagnosed with hypophosphatemia (low phosphate levels).

All of the children had allergies and were given Neocate as their primary source of food — and X-rays showed that 94% of the children had bone fractures, under-mineralization of bones, or rickets.

The authors of the study warned:

“The widespread nature of the findings lead us to strongly recommend careful monitoring of mineral metabolism in children fed EF (elemental formula).”

Neocate Baby Bone Fractures & Disfigurement

Babies who do not absorb enough phosphate are significantly more likely to suffer broken bones, weak bones, rickets, and other serious health problems. Low phosphate can be treated by switching the child to another soy-based baby food — but physical deformities caused by bone fractures may be permanent, resulting in a lifelong disability.

Neocate Formula Lawsuit

Our lawyers are evaluating Neocate lawsuits for the families of babies or young children who suffered:

  • Unexplained bone fractures
  • Broken bones
  • Rickets
  • Low phosphate levels
  • Hypophosphatemia
  • Under-mineralization of the bones
  • Bone development problems
  • disfigurement
  • Misdiagnosis of child abuse

What is Rickets?

Rickets causes soft, weak bones in children. It occurs when they do not get enough of the mineral phosphorus (phosphate), calcium, or Vitamin D. The symptoms of rickets include:

  • Bone pain or tenderness
  • Slow growth
  • Deformities of the bones or teeth
  • Muscle weakness
  • Bowed legs or “knock knees”
  • Thickened wrists or ankles
  • Breastbone protrudes

Symptoms of Low Phosphate Levels

Low phosphate levels can cause symptoms like poor appetite, muscle weakness, soft bones, bone fractures, broken bones, and rickets. In very severe or long-term cases, children with hypophosphatemia may develop seizures, encephalopathy (brain swelling), coma, and death.
