Jardiance and Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Jardiance, also known as empagliflozin, is a new treatment for type-2 diabetes that controls blood-sugar levels by helping the kidneys remove excess sugar through urine.
Jardiance is a sodium glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor. All drugs in the SGLT2 inhibitor class were linked to a risk of diabetic ketoacidosis in an FDA Safety Communication published in May 2015.
The FDA warns patients on Jardiance to seek emergency medical attention if they experience symptoms of ketoacidosis, such as:
- Difficulty breathing
- Nausea and vomiting
- Abdominal pain
- Unusual fatigue or sleepiness
- Confusion
