What is the problem with Januvia?
According to a 2011 study published in Gastroenterology, the type-2 diabetes drug Januvia (sitagliptin) has been linked to higher risks of pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. The researchers analyzed adverse event reports submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) between 2004 and 2009, and found the following risks:
- Pancreatitis: 131 events, 6.74-fold increased risk.
- Pancreatic cancer: 16 events, 1.69-fold increased risk.
This paper was later retracted by Gastroenterology at the request of several drug companies. Data from the FDA database should not be used to extrapolate risks to the general population. However, a large number of adverse events is often the first sign of an unanticipated side effect of a new drug. Pancreatic cancer is very rare and can take years to develop, which is why adequate research is difficult.
