Invokamet Kidney Failure Lawsuits

Invokamet contains canagliflozin, a diabetes medication in the SGLT2 inhibitor class. These drugs work by forcing the kidneys to remove extra glucose (sugar) from the body in urine.

Invokamet poses serious risks to people with pre-existing kidney problems because it relies so heavily on the kidneys to work. Having diabetes can also cause kidney damage, which is why experts are so concerned about nephrotoxic side effects.

Janssen Pharmaceuticals, the manfuacturer of Invokamet, is already facing lawsuits from people who developed kidney failure. One of the first lawsuits (PDF) was filed in Tennessee in December 2015.

FDA Warning for Kidney Failure

In December 2015, the FDA issued a Safety Communication and updated the label on Invokamet. The agency received reports of several patients who developed kidney infections (pyelonephritis) and needed dialysis for kidney failure. All of the patients were hospitalized and some needed intensive care.

What is Kidney Failure?

Kidney failure, also known as End-Stage Renal Disease (ERSD), occurs when the kidneys are severely damaged and perform less than 15% of their normal function.

The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located in the abdomen that are responsible for filtering the blood and removing extra water and wastes from the body in urine. The kidneys also secrete a variety of hormones, including those that stimulate the bone marrow to produce red blood cells.

Symptoms of Kidney Failure

The symptoms of kidney failure occur due to the build-up of waste products and extra water in the body. In early stages, it may cause no symptoms at all. Usually, at least some of the following symptoms will appear:

  • Reduced urine output
  • Swelling in the legs, angles, and feet due to fluid retention
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling very tired or weak
  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Chest pain or pressure
  • Seizures
  • Coma

Treatment for Kidney Failure

Kidney failure is incurable, but treatments can replace the function of the kidneys. Dialysis is a process in which the blood is removed from the body, cleaned in a machine, and returned to the patient. Kidney transplants involve surgery remove a diseased organ and implant another person’s healthy kidney.
