In 2009, Hydroxycut was recalled due to a deadly outbreak of liver damage. It was recently reformulated into Hydroxycut SX-7. Unfortunately, this non-stimulant formula may also increase the risk of liver damage.

Hydroxycut Linked to 23 Cases of Liver Damage
May 2009 — The FDA is warning consumers to immediately stop using Hydroxycut products after nearly two dozen people developed severe liver injuries:
“The FDA has received 23 reports of serious health problems ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, an indicator of potential liver injury, to liver damage requiring liver transplant. One death due to liver failure has been reported to the FDA.”
Other health problems not related to liver damage were reported, including:
- Seizures
- Cardiovascular disorders
- Rhabdomyolysis
- Muscle damage
- Kidney failure
HydroxyCut and Green Coffee Extract
Hydroxycut SX-7, marketed as a “non-stimulant” weight-loss supplement, contains 400-mg of green coffee blend, which contains an extract of Coffea canephora robusta.
Case Report Links EGCG in HydroxyCut to Abnormal Heart Rhythm
In June 2010, a case report was published of a 63 year-old woman who developed atrial fibrillation (abnormal heart rhythm) after taking Hydroxycut for two weeks. The doctors blamed her condition on Epigallocatechin (EGCG), the principal ingredient in green tea extract.
What is the problem?
Hydroxycut SX-7 contains a powerful extract of the green coffee bean. This ingredient has been advertised as a “miracle” weight-loss cure without side effects. However, foods that are beneficial in normal doses can become dangerous or even deadly when consumers use highly-concentrated extracts.
Another problem is that weight-loss supplements are not evaluated by the FDA for safety or effectiveness. They are typically only recalled after people are injured, and even then it can take months or even years for the product to be removed from the market.
Symptoms of Acute Liver Damage
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
- Pain in the upper-right abdomen
- Abdominal swelling
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Feeling unwell or sick
- Disorientation or confusion
- Fatigue
