FDA Evaluating Rhabdomyolysis Risk
The FDA is evaluating a potential signals of a serious risk and new safety information linking DPP4 diabetes drugs and rhabdomyolysis. This potentially life-threatening kidney side effect was identified by the FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) between April and June 2017.
Glyxambi and Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Boehringer Ingelheim’s new diabetes drug Glyxambi is actually a combination of two drugs, empagliflozin (Jardiance) and linagliptin (Tradjenta). The problem is that empagliflozin belongs to a class of drugs that were linked to over 20 case reports of diabetic ketoacidosis, according to a Safety Communication issued by the FDA in May 2015.
Ketoacidosis occurs when the body starts breaking down fat and muscle cells to use as a fuel source because it does not have enough insulin to use glucose (sugar) in the bloodstream. This releases ketones, which are toxic fatty acids. Ketones can build up in the blood and urine and cause devastating side effects, such as cerebral edema (swelling in the brain), heart attack, coma, and death.
The FDA asks patients to stay vigilant for symptoms of ketoacidosis and seek medical attention immediately:
“Patients should pay close attention for any signs of ketoacidosis and seek medical attention immediately if they experience symptoms such as difficulty breathing, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, confusion, and unusual fatigue or sleepiness.”
What is the problem?
The Clark Firm, LLP is a nationally-recognized team of trial attorneys in Texas. However, we are not filing a Glyxambi class action at this time. We are instead filing individual lawsuits and only accepting cases involving serious injuries, such as:
About Class Actions
You may have already been part of a class action. They are a popular way for a large number of people with a similar legal claim to seek compensation, especially when it wouldn’t make financial sense for everyone to file a lawsuit alone.
Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Glyxambi Class Action
For people who were severely injured or died after taking a defective medication, class action lawsuits can have major disadvantages. Members might have to accept a “low-ball” settlement, higher attorneys’ fees, or never get to see their case taken to trial.
Instead of a class action, our lawyers are filing individual lawsuits. We believe everyone who was injured by Glyxambi deserves their own attorney who is committed to their case. We specialize in helping victims of defective drugs file lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies that fail to warn about dangerous side effects.
