What is the problem?

There have been 24 reports worldwide — including 19 in the United States — of people who suffered chemical burns when their MixBin liquid glitter iPhone case broke and the liquid chemical leaked out.

MixBin claims the liquid chemical is “safe food grade snow globe liquid,” but there have been reports of people who suffered skin irritation and extensive swelling and permanent scarring after touching a broken glitter phone.

According to a warning from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC):

“One consumer reported permanent scarring from a chemical burn and another consumer reported chemical burns and swelling to her leg, face, neck, chest, upper body and hands.”

What Should I Do?

The recalled iPhone cases were sold for $16 to $65 online and in stores. MixBin is offering a full refund, but consumers will need to register on the website http://phonecaserecall.expertinquiry.com and submit a photo of the case. For more information on a refund, call MixBin at 855-215-4935.

What are Chemical Burns?

A chemical burn (also known as “caustic burn”) occurs when skin is damaged by exposure to a toxic chemical, either by direct contact or the inhalation of fumes.

Chemical Burn Complications

Chemical burns are physically disfiguring and extremely painful. Other symptoms usually include swelling and blistering due to the loss of fluid from damaged blood vessels. In severe cases, fluid loss can lead to shock. Burns can also lead to infection or permanent scarring. Patients may need surgery to control infections or implant a skin graft.

Symptoms of a Chemical Burn

  • Pain
  • Skin irritation
  • Redness
  • Swelling
  • Numbness in the affected area
  • Blisters
  • Black or dead skin

Chemical Burn Treatment

Topical antibiotics (skin creams or ointments) may be used to prevent infections from chemical burns. For 2nd-degree or 3rd-degree burns, extra fluids or blood transfusions may be necessary. If the skin has been severely damaged, patients may need surgery for a skin graft with artificial or natural materials. This can help the healing process.
