Fortesta is a testosterone gel product that is well-known to increase the risk of blood clots, which can potentially cause a life-threatening heart attack, stroke, or pulmonary embolism. Recent studies indicate that for men over 65, the risk of heart attack may double on testosterone therapy..
“That’s equivalent to smoking one to two packs of cigarettes a day, or having sky-high cholesterol.”

What is Fortesta?
Fortesta (2% testosterone gel) is a testosterone replacement therapy product manufactured by Endo Pharmaceuticals. It is applied to the inner thighs, where it is absorbed into the body as a treatment for low testosterone, or “Low T.”
What’s the problem?
In light of alarming studies linking testosterone and heart attacks, stroke, and death, numerous news organizations have published warnings for their viewers. Dr. Steve Nissen, Chief Cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic, warned:
“What’s going on is a giant experiment with American men’s health at stake, because we don’t have the long-term data on the safety of these products.”
FDA Warnings for Testosterone Heart Attack, Stroke Risk
March 4, 2015 — In a Safety Communication, the FDA is asking manufacturers of testosterone replacement products to stop marketing them for the treatment of age-related “Low T,” add warnings about heart attacks and strokes, and start studying the long-term risks. Click here to read more.
Studies Link Fortesta and Cardiovascular Risks
A recent and alarming study has found that testosterone replacement therapy could increase a man’s risk of heart attack, stroke, or death by 30% in the first 90 days of treatment. The study was published in November 2013 in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Additionally, a study of insurance records on over 55,000 men found that the risk of heart attack for men over 65 doubled during the first 90 days of treatment. In men under 65 who had a history of heart disease, the risk of heart attack almost tripled. Results were published in PLoS One in January 2014.

Why Does Fortesta Cause Blood Clots?
Fortesta increases production of red blood cells, thickens the blood, and elevates blood pressure. This increases the risk that platelets will clump together, coagulate, and obstruct a blood vessel. Blood clots are particularly dangerous when they get trapped in vital organs, because they can cause life-threatening organ damage, cardiovascular events, and other complications.
