Clif Bars Recalled Over Listeria Concerns
Clif Bar & Company issued a voluntary recall after its ingredient supplier, SunOpta, was found to have distributed sunflower kernels that could be contaminated with Listeria. The company has not received any reports of food poisoning.
Recall Part of Larger Sunflower Seed Problem
SunOpta, Inc., a Canadian company with headquarters in Edina, Minnesota, issued a recall for sunflower seed products on May 4.
Over the next month, well over 100 products were recalled, including granola bars, trail mix, bulk sunflower seeds, snack mixes, salad kits, and more.
Those products were distributed nationwide under brands like Planters and Sunrich Naturals. The seeds were also sold in granola bars made by Kashi, General Mills, Kellogg, and Quaker Oats. They were also in a variety of products sold by grocery stores like Trader Joe’s, Albertson’s, and Safeway.
What is Listeria?
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that can cause severe, sometimes fatal food poisoning. It can take two months (70 days) for some people to develop symptoms. Unlike most bacteria, Listeria can grow in a refrigerator and survive freezing.
Anyone can get sick, but the risk is most serious for young children, older adults, and people with pre-existing medical conditions. According to the FDA:
“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”
