Texas Benicar Celiac Disease LawyerThe symptoms of enteropathy from Benicar mimic Celiac disease (gluten allergy). However, unlike Celiac disease, a gluten-free diet does not cure gastrointestinal symptoms. The only way to treat enteropathy is by discontinuing Benicar. If you experienced these serious complications, contact The Clark Firm, LLP.

Benicar and Celiac Disease

Benicar (olmesartan) is a medication that is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). It was developed by Daiichi Sankyo and it belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor antagonists (ARB).

In August 2012, the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings published the first study linking Benicar and enteropathy. The author of the study, Dr. Joseph Murray, was a gastroenterologist who specialized in treating difficult cases of Celiac disease.

After several patients reported that their symptoms improved when they stopped taking Benicar, he investigated and concluded that Benicar could cause sprue-like enteropathy, which is very similar to Celiac disease. In July 2013, the FDA published a Drug Safety Communication to warn about this severe side effect.

Celiac Disease Misdiagnosis

If you were misdiagnosed with Celiac disease after taking Benicar, you are not alone. In February 2014, a man from Texas filed a lawsuit after he was misdiagnosed with Celiac disease for years. During this time, he was hospitalized 10 times for more than 100 days. By the time he was correctly diagnosed with sprue-like enteropathy, he had already suffered permanent intestinal damage and devastating complications of ineffective corticosteroid treatments, including cataracts and a back fracture.

What is Celiac Disease?

Celiac disease is an immune system reaction to eating gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. Eating gluten produces an inflammatory reaction in the intestines. Over time, this damages the lining of the intestines and interferes with absorption of nutrients. This can cause malnutrition, weight-loss, bloating, diarrhea, and other symptoms.

Symptoms of Celiac Disease

According to the Mayo Clinic:

  • Chronic diarrhea
  • Weight-loss
  • Constipation
  • Anemia (low iron)
  • Loss of bone density (osteoporosis)
  • Itchy, blistery skin rash
  • Damage to dental enamel
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Numbness, tingling, nervous system disorders
  • Joint pain
  • Reduced spleen functioning
  • Acid reflux, heartburn
