The weight-loss supplement Bella Vi has been recalled because it contains a hidden drug — sibutramine — which was banned in 2010 after researchers found it could increase the risk of seizures, heart attack, arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), and stroke.

What is Bella Vi?
Bella Vi is a weight-loss pill manufactured by Pure Edge Nutrition, LLC, based in Toms River, New Jersey. Products were sold nationwide from March until September 2013. Although Bella Vi was marketed as an “herbal” dietary supplement, it actually contained illegal prescription medications that were not listed on the label.
FDA Warning: Bella Vi Contains Hidden Drug Ingredients
October 10, 2013 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall and they are warning consumers not to use Bella Vi because it contains hidden drug ingredients.
According to the FDA, Bella Vi contains sibutramine, a prescription drug that was removed from the market in October 2010 for safety reasons. According to the FDA:
“These products pose a threat to consumers because sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and can present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. These products can also interact in life-threatening ways with other medications a consumer may be taking.”

What is Sibutramine?
Sibutramine, originally sold under the brand-name Meridia, is a weight-loss medication that suppresses appetite. It was taken off the market after a study found that people on sibutramine were more likely to have a cardiovascular event, such as a heart attack, irregular heart rhythm (arrhythma), or stroke. Sibutramine is also associated with seizures.
