UPDATE: J&J Reserves $4 Billion for Baby Powder Lawsuit Settlements

February 2021 — Johnson & Johnson reported that it has set aside $4 billion for 25,000 talcum powder lawsuits. In addition to planning for massive settlements, J&J is also attempting a last-ditch effort to overturn a $2.1 billion jury verdict for 22 women with ovarian cancer by appealing the verdict to the U.S. Supreme Court.

With around 25,000 baby powder lawsuits nationwide, judges have centralized all federal lawsuits involving Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower a Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2738) under U.S. District Judge Freda L. Wolfson in the District New Jersey.

Baby Powder Class Action Filed in Missouri

In May 2014, Courthouse News reported that Johnson & Johnson has been hit with a class action lawsuit on behalf of Missouri residents who purchased baby powder in the last five years. J&J Baby Powder Class Action Lawsuit Filed in California

A class action lawsuit has been filed by a woman who used baby powder regularly since the 1950s. The plaintiff, Mona Estrada, claims that she expected Johnson’s Baby Powder to be safe. Instead, studies have shown that talcum powder, an ingredient in Johnson’s Baby Powder, can increase a woman’s risk of ovarian cancer by 33% when used on the genitals.

What is the problem?

The Clark Firm, LLP is nationally recognized as a class action law firm, but we are not currently filing a baby powder class action. Class actions have already been filed, but these are not designed to maximize financial compensation for women who developed ovarian cancer. Instead, they are seeking refunds for everyone who bought baby powder without knowing about its risks.

About Class Actions

Class actions make sense when a large group of people have suffered the same type of injury from the same defendant — especially when it would be financially impractical for each person to file a lawsuit alone. Class actions aggregate a large number of claims into one representative action, which helps reduce costs and expedite a resolution for the whole group.

Why Our Law Firm is Filing Individual Lawsuits as Opposed to a Baby Powder Class Action

Class actions have advantages in certain circumstances, but they can also be problematic for individual plaintiffs with severe injuries. Members might have to accept high attorneys’ fees or a “low-ball” settlement, all without ever having the merits of their individual case presented before a judge and jury.

At The Clark Firm, LLP, our trial attorneys specialize in helping victims of defective products seek financial compensation and justice from negligent manufacturers. We believe companies who fail to warn about safety hazards can potentially be held liable by people who were injured. We always evaluate cases for free. In most circumstances, we also provide representation on contingency-fee.
