Axiron and Venous Thromboembolism

All testosterone replacement products, including Axiron, must carry warnings about the risk of venous blood clots and venous thromboembolism (VTE). The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a Safety Communication in June 2014 to warn about reports of VTE from testosterone.

Some adverse event reports were unrelated to polycythemia, a side effect of testosterone in which bone marrow produces more red blood cells, which thickens the blood and increases the risk of blood clots. The FDA is also investigating heart attack and stroke risk from Axiron, but these events are not caused by venous blood clots.

What is Venous Thromboembolism (VTE)?

Venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), is a common and deadly disease that can occur in men on testosterone. The disorder begins when a blood clot grows in a deep vein (almost always in the lower legs) and it ends when the blood clot travels to the lungs and clogs a blood vessel.

VTE is a life-threatening disorder that can cause sudden death. Over two-thirds of people who have VTE need to be hospitalized. About 50% of people with VTE develop long-term complications, such as post-thrombotic syndrome, which causes chronic pain, swelling, and ulcers in the legs.

  • Visible surface veins
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain (may be sudden, stabbing, especially with deep breaths)
  • Rapid heartbeat
