Axiron (underarm testosterone liquid) is a popular product for men who have symptoms of low testosterone, such as fatigue, sexual dysfunction, sagging muscles, and more. Unfortunately, recent studies indicate that testosterone replacement therapy may have life-threatening cardiovascular risks like heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism.

What is Axiron?
Axiron is an underarm liquid medication that delivers testosterone through the skin. It was developed by Eli Lilly & Co. and is marketed to men who have low testosterone, or “Low T.”
Millions of men use testosterone to treat low testosterone, but only half of them actually have hypogonadism, the medical condition Axiron is approved to treat. Hypogonadism is diagnosed in men who have testosterone levels below 300 ng/dL, and it can cause symptoms like erectile dysfunction, depressed mood, fatigue, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, and more.
Heart Risks of Axiron
Testosterone levels naturally decline by 1-2% per year after age 30, and there may be good reasons for this — testosterone treatment is well-known to thicken the blood, increase the number of red blood cells, and elevate blood pressure. These factors increase the risk of blood clots, which can potentially travel to a vital organ and cause a heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism or death.
FDA Warning for Testosterone Heart Attack, Stroke Risk
March 4, 2015 — In a Safety Communication, the FDA is asking manufacturers of testosterone replacement products to stop marketing them for the treatment of age-related “Low T,” add warnings about heart attacks and strokes, and start studying the long-term risks. Click here to read more.
Cardiovascular risks of Axiron:
- Blood clots
- Heart attack
- Pulmonary embolism
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Venous thromboembolism (VTE)
- Abnormal heart rhythm
- Organ damage
- And other serious side effects
What is the problem with Axiron?
Our lawyers are concerned that the life-threatening risk of cardiovascular events may outweigh any benefit of treating low testosterone, especially for men over 65 and those with heart disease or other risk-factors.
Lawsuits have already been filed against the manufacturers of other testosterone products, and plaintiffs allege that the health hazards were purposely downplayed, understated, or outright ignored. They are accused of “disease mongering” low testosterone to middle-aged men who are naturally losing testosterone as they age, and manipulating hypogonadism statistics to suggest widespread prevalence.
FDA Safety Warning for Testosterone Replacement Therapy
January 31, 2014 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published a Safety Alert in response to two studies linking testosterone therapy and cardiovascular risks:
- PLoS One: Men over 65 on testosterone may have a doubled increased risk of heart attack on testosterone.
- Journal of the American Medical Association: Older men may have a 30% increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death in the first three months of testosterone treatment.
