Drug-makers are facing lawsuits accusing them of “disease mongering” testosterone products like Androderm to middle-aged men who are losing testosterone as a normal part of aging. Unfortunately, recent studies have linked Androderm to an increased risk of blood clots, heart attack, stroke, and death.

What is Androderm?
Androderm (testosterone patch) is a transdermal system for delivering testosterone directly through the skin. It is manufactured by Actavis Inc. and is marketed to middle-aged men who have low testosterone.
FDA Warning for Testosterone Heart Attack, Stroke Risk
March 4, 2015 — In a Safety Communication, the FDA is asking manufacturers of testosterone replacement products to stop marketing them for the treatment of age-related “Low T,” add warnings about heart attacks and strokes, and start studying the long-term risks. Click here to read more.
Studies of Testosterone Heart Risks
In January 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in a Drug Safety Communication that they will investigate several studies linking Androderm and heart attacks, stroke, blood clots, and death.
These studies include a clinical trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2010, which linked testosterone to a 500% increased risk of cardiovascular events in older men with limited mobility. More recently, a study published in PLoS One linked testosterone to a two-fold increased risk of heart attack for men over 65, and a tripled increased risk for all men with heart disease.
A Mayo Clinic cardiologist who reviewed the studies told USA Today:
“That’s the equivalent to smoking one or two packs of cigarettes a day, or having sky-high cholesterol.”
What is the problem?
Testosterone levels naturally decline by 1-2% per year after age 30. This can produce side effects like fatigue, decreased libido, loss of muscle tone, and more. Though unpleasant, these side effects are not indicative of a medical problem — they are a normal part of aging.
The problem is that Androderm and other testosterone replacement treatments are marketed as a “cure-all” for aging, when they are actually only FDA-approved for men who have hypogonadism, a serious hormonal deficiency that occurs in men with missing testicles and disorders of the pituitary or hypothalamus.
Although 2.9% of men over 40 use testosterone, only 50% actually have hypogonadism. Our lawyers are concerned that many people on Androderm may have been misled by advertisements for “Low T,” and we are concerned that the life-threatening cardiovascular risks may outweigh any benefit for some patients.
Androderm and Blood Clots
The body may have some very good reasons for naturally decreasing testosterone levels in older men. Recent studies indicate that testosterone products like Androderm could substantially increase the risk of developing a blood clot.
Androderm is a Schedule III controlled substance because testosterone is often used illicitly by athletes looking to “pump up” their blood. The effects they seek are also risk-factors for blood clots. Androderm can elevate blood pressure, increase the number of red blood cells, and thicken the blood.
The label on Androderm carries warning about the risk of developing blood clots in the legs. If a blood clot forms in a vein or an artery, it can travel to a vital organ and cause severe side effects, such as:
