Testosterone Therapy Class Action Lawsuits Filed in CanadaJuly 25, 2014 — At least two class action lawsuits have been filed in Canada on behalf of men who used Delatestryl, a testosterone-boosting injection, and AndroGel, a topical gel.

The AndroGel class action was filed on June 26. The Delatestryl class action was filed in July 22 in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice.

Drug-makers are accused of failing to adequately warn patients and doctors that testosterone-boosting products may increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events, including heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and death.

These warnings were highlighted earlier this week in a safety alert from Health Canada.

Attorneys are seeking compensation on behalf of Canadians who purchased testosterone products. In the United States, over 150 lawsuits have been filed by men who were injured by blood clots and/or cardiovascular events.

Most lawsuits in the United States are centralized in a Multi-District Litigation (MDL), which is similar to a class action. The MDL is pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

The number of lawsuits involving testosterone has grown rapidly this year. On January 31, 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it was investigating the cardiovascular risks associated with testosterone therapy. The investigation began after two studies were published linking testosterone and higher rates of heart attack, stroke, and death — especially for older men with pre-existing heart disease.

In the last decade, the popularity of testosterone therapy has skyrocketed. Part of the success is due to a pervasive ad campaign suggesting that aging men with fatigue, sexual dysfunction, or moodiness might have low testosterone, or “Low T.” Although testosterone therapy is only approved for hypogonadism, many men use it to fight the natural side effects of aging.
