Does Talcum Powder Cause Endometrial Cancer?

Many adult women sprinkle talcum powder on their genitals for freshness and hygiene. The problem is that talc, a soft silicate mineral like asbestos, can migrate through the reproductive system and become embedded in the uterus or ovaries. No one knows if talc causes cancer, but irritating talc particles might cause mild inflammation that increases the risk of cancer over time.

Talc Linked to 24% Higher Risk of Endometrial Cancer

In 2010, researchers found a 24% increased risk of endometrial cancer in post-menopausal women who used talcum powder genitally once a week. The risk was slightly higher for women who used it more often. The study was published in Cancer Epidemiology, based on data from about 66,000 women and 600 cases of endometrial cancer between 1982 and 2004.

Study Finds 30% Increased Risk

In 2003, researchers analyzed 16 studies and found a 30% higher risk of ovarian cancer among women who used talcum powder genitally. Based on these studies, talc was classified as “possibly carcinogenic” when used genitally by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).

Talcum Powder Endometrial Cancer Lawsuits

Unfortunately, talcum powder products like Johnson’s Baby Powder or Shower-to-Shower do not have warning labels. Over 2,000 lawsuits have been filed by women with ovarian cancer or endometrial cancer. They accuse Johnson & Johnson of concealing the risk for decades.

In February 2016, the family of a woman who died of ovarian cancer was awarded $72 million by a jury in St. Louis, Missouri. Just three months later, another jury awarded $55 million to a woman who survived ovarian cancer after using baby powder for over 40 years.

What is Endometrial Cancer?

Endometrial cancer occurs when epithelial cells in the lining of the uterus (womb) begin growing uncontrollably. It is the most common type of uterine cancer in women.

How Common is Endometrial Cancer?

In the United States, the average woman has a 2.8% lifetime risk of endometrial cancer. The National Cancer Institute estimates that in 2016, about 60,000 women will be newly diagnosed and 10,500 will die from endometrial cancer.

Warning Signs & Symptoms

  • Heavy or irregular vaginal bleeding
  • Bleeding between periods
  • Bleeding after menopause
  • Pain in the pelvis or abdomen
  • Pain during sexual intercourse
  • Watery or blood-tinged discharge from vagina
  • Fatigue

Complications

Metastasis is a serious complication that occurs when cancerous cells leave the uterus and spread to other parts of the body. Endometrial cancer usually first spreads to the cervix, fallopian tubes, or ovaries.

Diagnosis

Your doctor may suspect cancer during a physical exam if the uterus or nearby organs feel abnormal. However, endometrial cancer can only be conclusively diagnosed by an expert who looks at a tissue sample (biopsy) from the uterus under a microscope.

Treatment

Surgery to remove the uterus (hysterectomy) can cure endometrial cancer when it is still confined to the reproductive system. However, treatment becomes much less successful after cancer metastasizes to the lymph nodes, bladder, intestines, or abdomen. Patients may need radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or hormonal therapy.
