Study Links Viagra and Melanoma But Doubts Causal RelationJune 24, 2015 — A new study has found higher rates of melanoma (skin cancer) among men on the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, but they concluded that lifestyle factors were probably to blame.

The study was published in Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) by researchers from New York University.

Results were based on medical records from 20,235 men in Sweden. Out of 4,065 men who were diagnosed with melanoma between 2006-2012, 435 of them used Viagra (sildenafil), Levitra (vardenafil), or Cialis (tadalafil).

Men who had filled at least one prescription for an erectile dysfunction drug were 21% more likely to be diagnosed with malignant melanoma, an aggressive type of skin cancer. However, higher doses were not associated with higher rates of melanoma.

However, after the researchers investigated further, they questioned the cause-and-effect relationship between Viagra and melanoma. Researchers pointed out that men who could afford Viagra were also more likely to be able to take sunny vacations.

The lead author of the study, Stacy Loeb, concluded:

“What our study results show is that groups of men who are more likely to get malignant melanoma include those with higher disposable incomes and education—men who likely can also afford more vacations in the sun—and who also have the means to buy erectile dysfunction medications, which are very expensive.”

The results were similar to another study published in JAMA last year, which involved 25,000 men and found an 84% increase risk of melanoma among men who had used Viagra. Click here to read more.
