Sherman Produce Recalls Walnuts for Listeria Risk

May 27, 2014 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is recalling walnuts from Sherman Produce of St. Louis, Missouri, after a sample tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause severe, life-threatening food poisoning.

The recall affects 241 cases of bulk walnuts packaged in 25-pound bulk cardboard boxes and Schnucks brand 10-ounce trays with UPC 00338390032 with best by dates 03/15 and 04/15. All walnuts produced during this time are being recalled.

Another walnut recall was issued on May 23 by Belleville Farmer’s Market of Belleville, Illinois. Packages of Shelled Walnuts may be contaminated with Listeria. The product comes in an 8-ounce, clear plastic package marked with a Farmer’s Market label with packing dates between March and May 2014.

According to the FDA, Listeria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with a weakened immune system:

“Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.”

The recalled walnuts were sold to retailers in Missouri and Illinois between March and May 2014. No illnesses have been reported to date.

• Muscle aches or pain
• Nausea
• Diarrhea
• Headache
• Stiff neck
• Confusion
• Loss of balance
• Convulsions
