Risperdal Lawsuit Filed by 22 Year-old With Gynecomastia

February 21, 2014 — Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson are facing hundreds of Risperdal lawsuits. The latest was filed by a young man from California who developed gynecomastia (enlarged breasts) and other serious side effects.

The lawsuit was filed on January 16 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California by plaintiffs Benjamin A. Verkest and his mother, Lori L. McKee-Callanan:

The 22 year-old plaintiff took Risperdal from 1997 to 2001, beginning when he was just six years old. He continued taking Risperdal to control behavioral and psychological issues until he was nearly 10 years old. During that time, he experienced significant weight gain, enlarged nipples, and developed enlarged breasts (gynecomastia). When he stopped taking Risperdal in 2011, he experienced negative side effects, including:

  • aggression
  • delayed onset of puberty
  • delayed motor skills
  • diabetes
  • damage to sexual and endocrine functions
  • hyperglycemia
  • sleeping disorders
  • severe emotional distress
  • permanent disfigurement
  • disability
  • and more

Janssen and J&J settled several Risperdal gynecomastia lawsuits in 2012, but they have been actively fighting the rest. In December 2013, the drug-makers paid $2.2 billion and pled guilty to criminal and civil charges alleging that they illegally marketed Risperdal. Prosecutors for the Justice Department accused the companies of promoting Risperdal for use in children, despite evidence of health risks and repeated warnings from the FDA. Click here to read more.
