June 9, 2015 — The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) posted an update to report that frozen ground tuna products used in sushi have tested positive for Salmonella and a recall has been issued by the importer.
The frozen tuna was imported from Indonesia by Osamu Corporation of Gardena, California. The company issued a recall (PDF) on May 27 for two lots of ground frozen yellowfin tuna.
The recall announcement also included a distribution list (PDF) of over 100 sushi restaurants in Southern California and Arizona where the recalled tuna was sent.
As of June 4, the CDC says a total of 53 people in nine states have been infected with an outbreak strain of Salmonella, including ten who were hospitalized with severe illness. Most of the victims reported eating sushi made with raw tuna in the week before getting sick.
Health officials in Arizona tested frozen tuna and found two strains of Salmonella in the tested products:
“As a result of the ongoing investigation, the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department working with the Arizona State Public Health Laboratory identified Salmonella Newport in one sample and Salmonella Weltevreden in another sample of frozen raw ground tuna products.”
The CDC warns that people who are at high-risk of food poisoning should not eat any raw fish or shellfish, regardless of an ongoing outbreak. These groups of people include:
- Children under 5 years old
- Adults over 65 years old
- Pregnant women
- People with weakened immune systems
Infection with Salmonella can cause diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps, and other symptoms for up to a week. While most healthy adults recover without needing medical treatment, infections can become invasive and cause life-threatening complications.
