January 22, 2012 — New York State Senator Jeffrey Klein is calling for legislation that would ban the sale of products containing DMAA (also known as 1,3-dimethylamylamine or “geranium oil”). Although manufacturers of DMAA claim it is a botanical extract, most experts agree that it is a synthetic drug that is illegally marketed as a dietary supplement. Around 200 products contain DMAA, including many popular pre-workout supplements like Jack3D, OxyElite Pro, Code Red, Hemo-Rage Black, and more.
The problem with DMAA is that it has been linked to an increased risk of life-threatening cardiovascular side effects, including sudden cardiac arrest. The product is known to constrict blood vessels and increase heart-rate. These effects could become life-threatening in combination with an underlying heart condition or intense exercise. DMAA has also been linked to nervous system and psychological disorders.
According to Senator Klein:
“Every sports organization, including the Olympics Committee, have already banned it. It’s a sign that this is a product that should be banned in our state and hopefully, eventually, nationally.”
In May 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) addressed the issue by sending warning letters to 10 manufacturers of supplements containing DMAA. The letters requested that the manufacturers submit a New Dietary Ingredient (NDI) application, because DMAA is not recognized as an approved ingredient in dietary supplements. In the meantime, supplements containing DMAA continue to be widely available over the internet and at major supplement retailers like GNC and Vitamin Shoppe.
Although DMAA is not banned nationally, it is banned on American military bases. The Department of Defense (DOD) banned the drug following the deaths of two soldiers. Both soldiers died of cardiac arrest during routine physical training and were found to have DMAA in their bloodstream.
