May 21, 2012 — Kevin Malley, a 30 year-old man from Las Vegas, is on a hunger strike to raise awareness that Propecia and Proscar can devastate your psychological, physical, and sexual health. He has been on a hunger strike since May 13, 2012, outside the headquarters of Merck, the drug company that sells Propecia and Proscar. Malley claims that the drugs ruined his life, and now he is calling for Merck and the FDA to immediately ban sales of these drugs.
Recently, Malley was accompanied by the friends, family, and supporters of Randy Santmann, a 22 year-old who killed himself after Propecia caused erectile dysfunction.
Malley claims that Propecia destroyed his life. When his fiancee discovered that his erectile dysfunction appeared to be permanent, she broke off their engagement. Malley began seeking help on the internet, and quickly discovered a forum for men like him. Hundreds of men around the world gathered online to discuss Propecia and Proscar side effects, exchange information, and support each other.
Many of these men have reported their side effects to the FDA. In total, the FDA received 421 adverse event reports describing severe, persistent, and sometimes permanent sexual dysfunction that occurred even after Propecia or Proscar were discontinued. In response, the FDA updated the warnings on the drugs to include information about the risk of libido disorders, ejaculation disorders, and orgasm disorders. They announced that the reported side effects indicated a wider range of sexual side effects than were previously included on the label.
Now, many men who have suffered from severe Propecia side effects are now contacting a Propecia lawyer regarding a Propecia lawsuit. Some people are specifically angry at Merck for failing to warn about the risk of sexual side effects in a timely manner, despite the fact that they had this information. Merck updated the labels in Europe several years before making the same updates in the U.S.
If you have been injured by Propecia or Proscar, it is possible that you could be entitled to financial compensation for your past and future pain and suffering, past and future medical expenses, decreased quality of life, lost income, and more.
Men with the most severe cases of sexual dysfunction are calling their disorder Post-Finasteride Syndrome. After they stopped taking Propecia or Proscar, they found that their symptoms resolved for a short period of time, and then grew suddenly worse and did not recover. It is unknown if the condition is curable, because Merck has not conducted any additional studies.
