November 3, 2017 — The family of a 2 year-old girl who died of an infection after being given Diocto Liquid laxative in a hospital has filed a federal lawsuit against the drug-maker, PharmaTech LLC.
The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Alivia Singleton, a girl who was being treated at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. She was given Diocto Liquid to prevent constipation from her pain medications.
In February 2016, she developed a fever and was diagnosed with an infection, but doctors could not figure out why. Alivia died in May 2016. Afterward, her mother learned that Diocto Liquid was recalled because Burkohlderia cepacia bacteria was found in unopened bottles.
The Singleton family filed a federal lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania against PharmaTech LLC and Rugby Laboratories, claiming that Alivia’s deadly infection was caused by bacteria Burkholderia cepacia in a bottle of Diocto Liquid.
PharmaTech’s Diocto Liquid and other liquid laxatives were linked to 63 confirmed cases of B. cepacia infections and 45 suspected cases in 12 states, according to an FDA update on October 27, 2017.
The FDA also reported that — yet again — lab tests detected B. cepacia in Rugby Diocto Liquid Laxatives:
“FDA testing has identified Burkholderia cepacia in several bottles of Rugby Diocto (docusate sodium) oral liquid from lot No. 20351701 manufactured by PharmaTech LLC, Davie, Florida.”
Lab tests on Diocto Liquid also found other types of bacteria, yeast, and mold contaminants. FDA reminded doctors not to give patients any liquid products made at PharmaTech’s facility in Davie, Florida.
The company sells liquid medications under several brand-names, such as Rugby, Leader, Major, Centurion, and Mid Valley.
