Kohl’s Pressure Cooker Lawsuit Filed by Burned Woman

October 30, 2024 — A lawsuit has been filed against Kohl’s Department Stores by a woman who was burned by an Instant Pot Pressure Cooker.

The lawsuit was filed by Yashira P., a woman from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, who claims that she was seriously burned in May 2021 by a defective Instant Pot ULTRA 60 Pressure Cooker from Kohl’s.

She claims that she was able to open the pressure cooker’s lid while it was still pressurized, “allowing its scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the pressure cooker” and all over her body.

She blames the incident on the “failure of the pressure cooker’s supposed safety mechanisms,” which had been advertised by the manufacturer to help keep consumers safe by locking the lid.

Her lawsuit quotes the User Manual, which assures consumers: “As a safety feature, until the float valve drops down the lid is locked and cannot be opened.”

Instead, she claims that she was able to easily remove the lid when the Instant Pot was still pressurized. The safety features “failed to properly function as to prevent the lid from being rotated, opened, and removed with normal force while the unit remained pressurized.”

Her lawsuit was filed on May 15, 2024 against Kohl’s Department Stores Inc. and Midea America Corp. in the Circuit Court for the State of Wisconsin (Milwaukee County) — Case 2024CV003921.
