What is the problem?

In September 2017, Children’s Hospital of New Orleans reported an outbreak of 7 infections with Mycobacterium abscessus in patients who had open-heart surgery between late May and July 2017.

The infections were tracked to a contaminated piece of equipment in the operating room — a machine that was used to regulate the temperature of the patient’s blood during cardiopulmonary bypass.

According to a statement released by the hospital:

“A common element in the affected children was open-heart surgery … We believe a piece of equipment used to regulate the temperature of patients while on bypass is the most likely source of this infection.”

Mycobacterial Infections

Mycobacterium abscessus is a slow-growing bacteria that is commonly found in water, soil, and dust. It does not normally infect healthy people — but if it lands in the chest of a patient undergoing open-heart surgery, it can cause a life-threatening heart infection.

Heater-Cooler Units and Heart Surgery Infections

Hospitals in the U.S. and worldwide have suffered dozens out outbreaks of Mycobacteria abscessus and Mycobacteria chimaera from contaminated Heater-Cooler Units (HCUs). These machines are found in nearly all operating rooms that perform open-heart surgery. If the machine is contaminated, Mycobacteria can blow into the air of an operating room from a vent on the back of the machine.

Symptoms of Heart Infections

The symptoms of an infection with Mycobacteria abscessus might appear right away, but it can take up to 5 years for symptoms to appear in some patients. The bacteria is very slow-growing and the signs of an infection are easily mistaken for other health problems.

Patients who underwent open-heart surgery at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans should seek medical attention immediately if they develop symptom associated with Mycobacterial infections, such as:

  • Night sweats
  • Muscle aches
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue
  • Unexplained fever
