Garden of Life RAW linked to 11 salmonella illnesses in 9 states, 1 hospitalization.February 4, 2016 — Garden of Life RAW Meal Organic Shake & Meal Replacements are being recalled because they appear to be linked to an outbreak of Salmonella that has sickened 11 people in nine states.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says 11 people have been infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Virchow, including one person who was hospitalized.

Out of 10 sick people who were interviewed, all 10 (100%) reported eating Garden of Life RAW Meal products. The first illnesses were reported on December 5, 2015.

Case Count by State: Minnesota (2), New Jersey (2), New Mexico (1), Ohio (1), Oklahoma (1), Oregon (1), Tennessee (1), Utah (1), and Wisconsin (1).

Health officials in Oregon and Utah also isolated Salmonella from open containers of Garden of Life RAW Meal products collected from sick people’s homes.

The recalled flavors include chocolate, original, vanilla, and vanilla chai. The products have a long shelf-life and do not expire until September / October 2017. Click here for a complete list of recalled products..

Healthy people infected with Salmonella may experience fever, diarrhea (may be bloody), nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, the infection can lead to serious complications, according to the FDA:

“Infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”
