March 20, 2014 — When the FreeStyle Blood Glucose Meter (or FreeStyle Flash) is used with the FreeStyle test strips, it may produce mistakenly low blood-sugar readings. The recall announcement was issued by Abbott Diabetes Care, who said the meters have not been in production since 2010.
In November 2013, Abbott recalled test strips used with the FreeStyle readers due to the potential for inaccurate low blood sugar readings. The blood-glucose meters were not recalled at that time. Other blood-sugar meters are not affected by the recall.
What Should I Do?
Contact Abbott Diabetes Care at (888) 345-5364 to get a replacement blood-sugar meter.
If you have another blood-sugar meter, immediately stop using the recalled meter and use the alternative meter.
If you only have the recalled meter, continue to test your blood-sugar as recommended by a doctor. When using the recalled meter, take the following precautions:
- As stated in the product insert, perform a quality control solution test to confirm that your meter is working correctly. Do not use a test strip vial if control solution results are not within the expected range.
- Contact your health care provider immediately if your blood glucose result(s) are not consistent with your diabetes history, how you feel, or if you think your results are not accurate (higher or lower than expected). Symptoms of high blood sugar include excessive thirst, excessive urination, blurred vision, weakness, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms or are not feeling well, contact your health care professional immediately.
