January 29, 2016 — Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. is recalling all packaged salad mixes produced at a facility in Springfield, Ohio after they were linked to a deadly outbreak of Listeria.
Since July 5, 2015, at least 15 people in eight states have been infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria, including one person who died. All of the victims were hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
Case Count by State: Connecticut (1), Indiana (1), Massachusetts (1), Michigan (4), Missouri (1), New Jersey (1), New York (5), and Pennsylvania (1).
Salad mixes brands included in the recall:
- Dole
- Fresh Selections
- Simple Truth
- Marketside
- The Little Salad Bar
- President’s Choice Organics
The investigation has been ongoing since September 2015. It was not until January that lab tests confirmed Listeria in a packaged salad collected in Ohio linked the illnesses to the Dole processing facility, according to the FDA.
The recall includes a wide range of salad mixes that were packaged in plastic bags and plastic clamshell containers. The types of salad mixes can be identified by the letter “A” at the beginning of the manufacturing code.
Recalled salad mixes include arugula, bacon and bleu cheese, caesar, BBQ ranch, chipotle and cheddar, coleslaw, field greens, iceberg, Italian blend, kale, lettuce, Mediterranean, romaine, sesame ginger, spinach, sunflower, vegetable blends, and more.
What is Listeriosis?
Listeriosis is a serious type of food poisoning caused by the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes.
