May 5, 2015 — Pfizer has been hit with a lawsuit on behalf of a man who used Depo-Testosterone and developed blood clots.
Paul Comfort was prescribed Depo-Testosterone to treat symptoms he attributed to low testosterone. He and used it from approximately November 2011 until September 2012, beginning when he was 71 years old. At the time, he was otherwise healthy.
Mr. Comfort was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (blood clots in the legs) in May 2012, and again in February 2013. As a result, he must adhere to a strict diet, undergo regular testing, and take medications.
According to the complaint:
“Due to his deep vein thrombosis, he is now at markedly increased risk of additional cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular accidents, and death.”
Depo-Testosterone is an injectable testosterone medication that is only approved for men with hypogonadism, a relatively rare hormonal deficiency caused by genetic conditions, missing testicles, and other problems.
Hundreds of testosterone lawsuits claim the products were promoted as a panacea for middle-aged men with excess body fat, fatigue, and other symptoms normally associated with aging. Last year, Pfizer argued that Depo-Testosterone should be excluded from the federal litigation because they were not behind the “Low T” ads.
The problem is that several studies have suggested that testosterone therapy could increase a man’s risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. A natural side effect of testosterone is an increased number of red blood cells, which could thicken the blood and lead to blood clots.
In June 2014, the FDA ordered testosterone-makers to add warnings about deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Earlier that year, the FDA also warned about several studies linking testosterone and heart attacks.
