Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein. It is a potential side effect of many testosterone replacement products. If you were not aware of the risk of blood clots before taking Depo-Testosterone, you are not alone.

Depo-Testosterone and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Depo-Testosterone is an intramuscular injection of testosterone cypionate, a synthetic hormone. It is used to treat male hypogonadism (low testosterone) due to a medical condition.
Like all testosterone replacement products, one potential side effect is an increased number of blood platelets. The added cells in the bloodstream can thicken the blood, which may elevate blood pressure and increase your risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or blood clots in the legs. This is why some doctors recommend blood tests before starting testosterone therapy to determine if you are at risk of blood clotting.
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) Overview
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that grows deep inside the body. Nearly all cases occur in the lower leg (calf) or thigh, but some cases occur in other areas of the body (arm, kidney, pelvis, etc.). Blood clots associated with DVT grow spontaneously, when there is no injury. They can grow very large and cause serious circulatory problems or deadly complications like pulmonary embolism (blood clots in the lungs).
Only about 50% of cases of DVT produce symptoms. If you do have symptoms — especially if they occur suddenly — call your doctor right away. DVT symptoms may include:
- Swelling in one or both legs
- Pain or tenderness
- Hard, worm-like veins that you can feel through your skin
- Red or discolored skin
- Skin feels very warm to the touch
