CDC Processing Texas Cyclospora Case Counts, 600+ SickenedAugust 22, 2013 — Since August 20, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has reported a different case count for the Cyclospora food poisoning outbreak than the Texas Department of Health. The CDC reports only 250 cases in Texas, when the actual case count in the state is 274 cases.

When questioned about the difference in case count numbers, a spokeswoman for the CDC stated:

“The reason for the difference has to do with the reporting process. They have a process that they go through when they report the information to us. It just takes a little bit longer for us to get everything. It’s just the process — it’s not that the numbers are actually different.”

If the additional 24 cases in Texas are added to the CDC numbers, the total number of cases in the Cyclospora outbreak is now at least 625 people, with 40 hospitalizations. It is still not clear whether cases are part of the same outbreak. If so, it would be the largest outbreak of cyclosporiasis in the U.S. since the CDC began tracking the disease in the 1990s.

Last week, a lawsuit was filed against Taylor Fresh Foods Inc., Mex Luna Produce Co., and Bob’s Taco Station in Rosenberg, Texas. The plaintiffs, Kennon Smith and Lyndsay Smith, allege that the defendants negligently imported, manufactured, distributed, and marketed salad ingredients contaminated with Cyclospora and failed to warn consumers about the danger. Fort Bend County health officials have reported at least 33 cases of cyclosporiasis, but no source has been identified.
