December 11, 2018 — An investigation by the Associated Press found over 12,000 complaints about breast implant injuries in the last year alone.
Breast implants were linked to over 4,000 injury reports in the last half of 2017, plus another 8,000 injury reports in the first half of 2018, according to the AP.
Previously, it seemed like there were only 200 complaints about breast implant injuries.
That all changed last month, when the FDA ordered the manufacturers of breast implants to stop reporting complaints in bulk, and start filing a report for each individual injury.
The flood of complaints adds more evidence that textured breast implants can cause a rare blood cancer called Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (ALCL).
The FDA has been investigating the link between ALCL and breast implants since 2011. There are now over 400 reports of women who developed cancer after receiving textured implants, including 9 reports of women who died of breast cancer.
Experts are still investigating why textured implants seem to increase the risk of cancer compared to smooth-surfaced breast implants.
Some studies suggest that bacterial contamination persists on the textured surface, leading to low-level inflammation that can eventually cause cancer to develop many years later.
