June 18, 2012 — According to an article published in the Examiner, Larry Lee Bosley was aware of the severe, potentially permanent sexual side effects of Propecia (finasteride) soon after it was approved by the FDA in 1997, but three years later, he began prescribing it to his patients anyway. Bosley is the guru behind the hair-restoration empire Bosley Medical, which is responsible for at least 70 clinics in four countries.
In a news release after the FDA approved Propecia in 1997, Bosley is quoted as saying:
“The FDA has just approved a drug that has the capability to impair male sexual performance, creating the inability to achieve an erection [and] decreases libido. … The potential side effects, especially the long-term side effects of the drug, should be the overriding concerns to both the users and the manufacturer.”
Some men who were injured by severe Propecia side effects were former patients of Bosley. According to the Examiner, one patient who was treated in a Bosley clinic in Beverly Hills, California said that he was assured that Propecia was safe. His doctors told him that if he had side effects, they would resolve when Propecia was discontinued. Instead, a few weeks later, the man says he began to suffer from depression, panic attacks, shrinkage of his testicles, loss of libido, gynecomastia (enlargement of male breast tissue), and other side effects.
The Examiner also describes the case of a man who was treated for hair-loss in 2000 at a Bosley clinic. The patient allegedly developed Peyronie’s disease, in which scar tissue forms inside the testicles, causing severe testicular pain.
Currently, the FDA is investigating hundreds of cases of adverse events reported by men who took Propeica. Just a few months ago, the agency forced Merck to update the warning information on Propecia to include more side effects, such as persistent erectile dysfunction, orgasm disorders, ejaculation disorders, and more.
It appears that many men who took Propecia have developed the severe, persistent sexual dysfunction that Bosley was also concerned about in the 1990s. According to the Examiner, some of these men feel betrayed because Bosley was apparently aware of the risks, but chose to expose his patients to these risks anyway.
Thousands of men who used Propecia (finasteride) have reported severe side effects to their sexual, physical, and mental health. In some cases, these debilitating symptoms persist for months, years, or indefinitely after Propecia is discontinued.
