September 19, 2016 — The owners of a black-market body parts business are trying to suppress evidence gained from a search of their Detroit-area warehouse.
Arthur Rathburn, 62, and his estranged wife Elizabeth Rathburn, 56, were owners of International Biological Inc.
They are under federal indictment for selling cadavers infected with HIV, hepatitis, and other diseases to unsuspecting medical students, according to The Detroit News.
Last month, lawyers for the Rathburns filed a 156-page motion to suppress evidence obtained from the search of the Grinnell Warehouse, claiming investigators lacked probable cause.
Prosecutors say the warehouse was a hub of illegal activity where Arthur Rathburn dismembered human bodies with a chainsaw or band saw “without using sanitary precautions.”
The indictment alleges that he stored un-embalmed, disease-contaminated human heads by stacking them directly on top of each other without protective measures. According to prosecutors:
“Bodies were bought, sold, and disposed of contrary to the will of donors. Infected remains were passed off as noninfectious. Lies were told to state and federal regulators.”
Some of the bodies came from Anatomical Service Inc. or Biological Resource Center. — companies owned by Stephen Gore, another “body broker” who pled guilty to mishandling donated body parts. He was accused of harvesting and selling body parts for profit without consent from the deceased or families.
