Bio-T-Gel is a testosterone replacement product for the treatment of male hypogonadism (low testosterone). Unfortunately, testosterone can potentially increase the risk of developing blood clots in the legs — also known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This condition is not usually life-threatening, but it can lead to deadly complications like pulmonary embolism.

Bio-T-Gel and Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Bio-T-Gel is a topical gel that delivers testosterone directly through the skin. When it is absorbed into the bloodstream, testosterone can increase the number of red blood cells and thicken the blood, which may increase your risk of developing blood clots in the legs or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
What is Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)?
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a blood clot that forms in a vein deep in the body. In most cases, the blood clot grows in the lower leg or thigh. DVT is relatively common and not all cases are life-threatening. However, if the blood clot travels in your bloodstream, it can block a blood vessel in the lungs and cause a deadly pulmonary embolism.
DVT does not always produce symptoms. When symptom appear, they may include:
- Swelling in one or both legs
- Pain or tenderness in one leg (may only happen when standing or walking)
- Skin feels warmer than usual
- Skin is more red than usual
The goal of treatment is stopping the clot from getting bigger, preventing more blood clots from growing in the legs, and dissolving existing clots. The most effective medicines are anti-coagulants (blood-thinners), such as warfarin or heparin. Warfarin is an oral blood-thinner that provides long-term protection against DVT and heparin is an intravenous (IV) blood-thinner that is administered in a hospital.
