Bio-T-Gel Blood Clot

Bio-T-Gel is a testosterone gel product that is known to cause blood clots in the legs. However, recent studies warn that Bio-T-Gel could elevate the risk of blood clot complications — one study found that testosterone could double the risk of heart attack for men over 65, and another found that the risk of stroke and death was 30% higher in the first 90 days of treatment.

What is a Blood Clot?

Blood clots are healthy and beneficial when they stop bleeding. However, when they form spontaneously, blood clots can also cause life-threatening complications like heart attack, stroke, or pulmonary embolism. The process of blood clotting is complex. Risk-factors include abnormal blood-flow, high blood pressure, thick blood, and a greater number of red blood cells.

Bio-T-Gel and Blood Clots

The Prescribing Information for Bio-T-Gel includes warnings about blood clots in the legs, which may cause pain, swelling, and redness in the legs. This condition, also known as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), increases for men on testosterone.

Testosterone increases levels of the kidney hormone erythropoietin, which causes bone marrow to produce more red blood cells. This increases the volume and viscosity of blood, which also increases blood pressure. Some research indicates that testosterone may also cause water retention, increase estradiol in the bloodstream, and reduce HDL (“good”) cholesterol levels. Not surprisingly, these factors can all contribute to an increased risk of blood clots.

  • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT): Blood clots in the lower legs cause pain, redness, warmth, and swelling.
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE): Blood clots in the legs may break loose, migrate to the lungs and cause a pulmonary embolism. Symptoms may include chest pain, coughing up blood, dizziness, shortness of breath, and changes in heart rhythm.
  • Heart attack: Blood clots in the heart obstructing the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle with blood. Study published in PLOS One linked testosterone to a doubled risk of heart attack for men over 65 years old.
  • Ischemic stroke: Blood clots in the brain. Study published in JAMA found that the risk was 30% higher in the first 90 days of testosterone replacement therapy.
