FDA Investigating Benicar and Cardiovascular Side Effects

In June 2010, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published a Drug Safety Communication to announce that they would investigate evidence of cardiovascular side effects from Benicar, including heart attack, stroke, and sudden death.

Two clinical trials, ROADMAP and ORIENT, found that patients with type-2 diabetes who used Benicar had a higher rate of death from a heart attack or stroke compared to patients on a placebo. In ROADMAP, there were 15 cardiovascular-related deaths in Benicar patients, compared to 3 deaths in the placebo group. In ORIENT, Benicar was linked to 10 deaths, compared to 3 deaths in patients on a placebo.

Benicar and Intestinal Side Effects

Intestinal villous atrophy is a side effect that may occur in patients on Benicar who develop sprue-like enteropathy. Symptoms of this disease include chronic diarrhea, substantial weight loss, nausea and vomiting, and electrolyte abnormalities. Villous atrophy occurs when inflammation damages villi, which are microscopic tentacles on the wall of the intestine that absorb nutrients.
