Daiichi Sankyo, the manufacturer of Benicar (olmesartan), is facing lawsuits from patients who accuse the drug-maker of downplaying risk information. Unfortunately, Benicar may increase the risk of kidney failure and other severe side effects.

Benicar and Kidney Failure
Benicar is an anti-hypertensive drug that works by blocking angiotensin II, a substance that causes muscles to tighten blood vessels. By relaxing these muscles, Benicar helps reduce blood pressure.
According to the Prescribing Information, studies of Benicar and other angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs) have shown possible kidney side effects, including kidney failure. Therefore, patients with pre-existing kidney disease should be closely monitored for worsening kidney problems when they start taking Benicar. Patients may need a blood test before starting Benicar.
In post-marketing experience, ARBs have been linked to acute kidney failure. They have also been linked to higher levels of creatinine in the bloodstream, which is one of the first symptoms of kidney impairment.
In patients with certain risk-factors, such as heart failure, Benicar and other ARBs have been linked to several kidney disorders. These include oliguria (low urine output), progressive azotemia (high levels of waste in blood), and in rare cases kidney failure or death.
Sprue-like enteropathy is a severe side effect of Benicar that can cause chronic diarrhea and substantial weight-loss. Because symptoms mimic Celiac disease, some patients were misdiagnosed for months or years. Over time, the disease can cause malnutrition and dehydration, which can lead to severe kidney complications.
FDA Warning for Benicar + Tekturna
In April 2012, the FDA published a Drug Safety Communication to warn against using Benicar in combination with another blood-pressure drug, aliskiren (Tekturna). These medications can interact and cause kidney impairment, low blood pressure, high potassium, and other complications.
What is Kidney Failure?
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs about the size of a fist, located near the middle of the back, below the rib cage. Kidney failure (also known as “renal insufficiency”) occurs when the kidneys are unable to filter blood and remove waste products. This results in a buildup of waste and excess fluid in the bloodstream. When the kidneys fail, patients will either need an organ transplant or dialysis.
Signs & Symptoms
- Decreased urine output
- Abdominal pain (located in the back below the rib cage)
- Peripheral edema (swelling in the feet due to excess water)
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea, vomiting
- Yellowish-brown skin color
