Androderm, a testosterone patch developed by Actavis Inc., has been linked to a 30% increased risk of stroke in a recent study. Now, manufacturers testosterone replacement products are under scrutiny for aggressively marketing testosterone to men with “Low T” while minimizing risk information about strokes.

Androderm and Stroke
Androderm delivers the hormone testosterone via a patch on the skin. This is marketed as a treatment for low testosterone, or “Low T.” Unfortunately, many lawsuits allege that drug-makers are not sufficiently warning about the risk of ischemic stroke (blood clots in the brain).
Testosterone increases the risk of stroke in several ways. First, it thickens the blood and elevates blood pressure by increasing the number of red blood cells. This increases the risk of a blood clot. The risk is highest during the first six months of treatment, but blood clots can occur at any time. If a blood clot develops, it can potentially break loose, travel to the brain, and cause a stroke.
30% Increased Risk of Stroke from Androderm
In November 2013, Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published a study linking the use of testosterone to a 30% increased risk of stroke, heart attack, and death. After three years, the overall cardiovascular event rate was 25.7% for men on testosterone, versus 19.9% for men not on testosterone.
What is a Stroke?
During an ischemic stroke, the brain is starved of oxygen and nutrients it needs to survive. Millions of brain cells die every minute they are without oxygen. This causes permanent brain damage. The complications and severity varies widely, depending on what part of the brain is damaged. However, disability occurs in over two-thirds of cases. These complications may include memory loss, speech problems, paralysis, blindness, and more.
Symptoms of a Stroke
- Drooping side of the face
- Slurred speech
- Problems understanding speech
- Problems reading
- Sudden numbness, tingling, weakness, or loss of muscle coordination
- Falling or problems walking
- Vision blurriness or loss of vision
- Arms drift downward when raised
