Androderm Heart Attack

Androderm Heart AttackStudies linking Androderm and heart attacks suggest that the risk may double for men over 65 — and triple for men with heart disease. In recent years, drug-makers have been harshly criticized for aggressively promoting Androderm to men who do not have hypogonadism while downplaying the risk of heart attacks.

Androderm Heart Attack

Androderm (testosterone patch), manufactured by Actavis Inc., delivers the hormone testosterone through a patch on the skin. Testosterone is known to increase the number of red blood cells, which thickens the blood, elevates blood pressure, and increases the risk of a blood clot. If a blood clot gets trapped in the heart muscle, it can potentially cause a deadly heart attack.

Studies Linking Testosterone Therapy and Heart Attack

One of the first studies linking testosterone therapy and heart attacks was published in 2010 by the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers were forced to halt the study prematurely after older men with limited mobility had 5-times as many heart attacks as similar men who did not take testosterone.

Two recent studies back up these findings in older men — JAMA published a study in November 2013 linking testosterone to a 30% increased risk of heart attack in the first 90 days of treatment. In January 2014, PLOS ONE found that men over 65 on testosterone had twice the risk of heart attack, and men under 65 with heart disease had a tripled risk of heart attack.

Androderm Label Updated With Heart Attack Warnings

March 3, 2015 — In a Safety Communication, the FDA required the manufacturer of Androderm to update the label to warn about a possible increased risk of heart attack.

The FDA also asked for new clinical trials to assess the long-term heart attack risk of testosterone therapy. Finally, the FDA clarified that Androderm is not approved or recommended for “Low T” associated with aging. Click here to read more.

What is a Heart Attack?

A heart attack, or “myocardial infarction,” is a life-threatening medical emergency in which a blood clot or fatty plaque deposit obstructs a coronary artery, which supplies blood to the heart muscle. Without blood, the heart muscle is starved of the oxygen it needs to pump blood. Within minutes, it causes tissue damage or death. If the heart is seriously damaged, it may be too weak to effectively circulate blood. This can lead to heart failure and death.
