3M manufactures the Bair Hugger, a specialized surgical warming blanket that works like a forced-air warmer. It blows hot air onto a patient to keep them warm while they are under anesthesia during surgery.

One of its most vocal critics is its inventor, an anesthesiologist named Dr. Scott Augustine. In 2010, he told the New York Times that hospitals should stop using the Bair Hugger and switch to another device he invented that works like an electric blanket. He warned that the Bair Hugger could potentially spread bacteria associated with hospital-acquired infections.

Recently, lawsuits have been filed by people who developed infections after hip or knee replacement surgery. One lawsuit was filed by a 70 year-old man who had to have 15 surgeries on his hip after developing an infection. Another lawsuit was filed by a man who developed MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant “superbug” infection, and had to have his leg amputated.
