January 3, 2011 — After deliberating since the beginning of December, a U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation has decided it will centralize Actos bladder cancer litigation in the Western District of Louisiana. The cases will be overseen by U.S. district Judge Rebecca Doherty, under Actos Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2299.

Actos, the world’s most popular medication prescribed for the treatment of type-2 diabetes, has faced a global backlash after several research studies linked the drug to bladder cancer, which can cause death.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., the maker of Actos, is Asia’s largest drug manufacturer. A previous report found that Takeda may face 10,000 lawsuits from consumers who have taken the medication and suffered a serious, potentially life-threatening side effect. In September, the company acknowledged that there were already 54 lawsuits regarding Actos and bladder cancer. Since that announcement, dozens more lawsuits have been filed.

The lawsuits allege that Takeda withheld important safety information, minimized the side-effect information, and did not clearly warn consumers of the risk of bladder cancer.

It is likely that Takeda will face more lawsuits as more consumers become aware of the ongoing litigation against the drug-makers. If you have suffered a side effect after taking Actos, you may want to contact a lawyer for an Actos lawsuit. You may be entitled to compensation.

In 2011, French medical authorities revoked approval of the medication, and suspended sales. Soon after this announcement, Germany authorities recommended that people should not start taking Actos. Takeda Phamaceuticals Co is in the midst of a 10-year safety study of the medication, but at the 5-year mark, preliminary results show a slightly increased risk of bladder cancer. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced in June 2011 that Actos may increase a person’s risk of developing bladder cancer when the medication is taken for at least one year at high doses.
