What is ABC Dophilus?

ABC Dophilus is a powdered dietary supplement that contains three species of live bacteria. It is made by Solgar, Inc., and specifically marketed as a “blend of beneficial friendly bacteria” for children and infants.

ABC Dophilus Recall

In November 2014, Solgar Inc. issued a recall for ABC Dophilus because the product was found to contain Rhizopus oryzae, which may cause mucormycosis. It was discovered in an unopened bottle of ABC Dophilus. Distribution of the product has been suspended while the source of the problem is under investigation.

FDA Safety Warning

December 2014 — The FDA has issued a Safety Communication to warn doctors about the risk of fungal infections from probiotic supplements in immunocompromised patients:

“These products are not subject to FDA’s premarket review or approval requirements for safety and effectiveness, nor to the agency’s rigorous manufacturing and testing standards for drugs, including testing for extraneous organisms.”

Infant Dies After Being Given ABC Dophilus

In October 2014, a premature infant died from mucormycosis after being given ABC Dophilus as part of the normal course of treatment in a hospital setting. The infant was very premature (under 32 weeks gestation) and had multiple complications.

ABC Dophilus in Infants

ABC Dophilus became popular after several peer-reviewed studies suggested that probiotic supplements could prevent necrotizing enterocolitis, a life-threatening disease that occurs when the lining of the intestinal wall dies.

No one knows what causes this disease, but it is more common in premature infants. When the FDA reviewed these studies, the agency found that they lacked adequate documentation concerning safety risks for newborns.

What is Mucormycosis?

Mucormycosis is a fungal disease that can occur in the sinuses, brain, lungs, intestines, and other parts of the body.

Infections most often occur in people with weakened immune systems, including premature infants, people with uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, organ transplants, neutropenia (low white blood cells), and skin trauma (cuts, scrapes, punctures, or burns). In rare cases, mucormycosis also occurs in healthy adults.

Symptoms of gastrointestinal mucormycosis include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Blood in the stools
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting blood
