Patients Injured by Stryker Hips Continue to File Lawsuits

February 16, 2015 — The St. Cloud Times highlighted the case of Paul Orndorff, a 59 year-old man who was injured by a catastrophically defective Stryker Rejuvenate implant.

Orndorff said problems began about a year and a half after the Rejuvenate was implanted, when he developed symptoms of metal poisoning. After three hip replacements and five surgeries in the last five years, he now has an 18-inch scar and a divot in the muscle around his left hip.

According to Orndoff:

“What that cobalt and chromium poisoning does is it poisons your blood, and it eats your tissue. … Basically, it just slowly starts attacking the muscle and soft tissue. It’s necrotic and dead.”

He is now undergoing physical therapy using a novel “anti-gravity” treadmill. It allows him to exercise putting as little a 20% of his body weight on the hip.

Last year, Stryker agreed to pay over $1 billion to resolve about 4,000 lawsuits involving the Rejuvenate hip implant. Each qualified member of the litigation is expected to receive a base payment of $300,000, plus additional compensation for more serious injuries.

Orndorff is one of thousands of people who have already filed lawsuits, and continue to file lawsuits as more and more implants fail. More than 20,000 of the devices were implanted in patients before the recall was issued.

The Rejuvenate and ABG II modular-neck implants were recalled in July 2012 due to excessive rates of corrosion. Many people suffered from “catastrophic failures” when the implant released toxic chromium and cobalt into their hip, body, and bloodstream.

Once these complications occur, patients require revision surgery or treatment for metal poisoning.
