Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Recalled for Listeria RiskApril 23, 2015 — Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams has recalled all ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbets, and ice cream sandwiches in all flavors and containers due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes.

No reports of illness have been linked to the products. The recall was issued voluntarily after a sample randomly collected by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture tested positive for Listeria.

Jeni’s is a boutique ice cream brand based in Columbus, Ohio. The company has decided to recall everything on store shelves and close their scoop shops until they are “100 percent confident every item we sell is safe.”

Jeni’s operates shops in at least seven states and sells ice cream at Whole Foods. The shops are located in Columbus, Cleveland, Nashville, Atlanta, Charleston, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

According to the announcement posted on Jeni’s website:

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals infected by Listeria may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, infected pregnant women can suffer miscarriages or stillbirths.”

This is the second time this year an ice cream retailer has issued recalls due to possible Listeria contamination.

In March, the iconic Texas-based Blue Bell ice cream brand issued recalls for all products — the first recall in its 108-year history. Health officials have linked at least 10 illnesses to Blue Bell ice cream, including three hospital patients who died in Kansas.
